A Pune-based business claims to have developed the first recyclable eyewear manufactured from used chip packets.
On Twitter Thursday, Anish Malpani announced the release of the recycled sunglasses, calling it the "hardest thing" he has ever been a part of. At a facility in Pune, the former finance expert spent two years studying and developing the recycled eyewear out of multi-layered plastics (MLP).
According to the Indian Express, Malpani set out to address the issue of multi-layered plastics, which are notoriously challenging to recycle, when he founded his social impact start-up Ashaya in February 2021. Multi layered plastics, which are created by fusing several materials, pose a severe risk to the environment. Most frequently, this form of plastic is used to package food items, such as the chip packets that Malpani used to make his collection of recycled sunglasses.
In order to gather abandoned packs of chips, Malpani and his crew collaborated closely with waste pickers.
According to a film introducing the idea behind the sunglasses, the money made from them would be utilised to pay rubbish pickers better and support the education of their children.
According to Malpani, a beta version of the spectacles has been made available at a discounted price of Rs 1,099.
The UV polarised, unisex(suitable for any gender) sunglasses are slightly over 25 grams in weight and were introduced under the brand name Without.
Polarized lenses will not protect your eyes from UV damage more than standard 100% UV lenses. However, they can give you clearer, more accurate vision and alleviate some eye strain.
Consumers can scan a QR code on the side of the sunglasses to learn information such as how many packets were used in their production and which trash collectors collected the packets.
