February 23rd, 2023: Famous midfielder who played for clubs like Newcastle and Chelsea, passed away in an earthquake.
Ghana’s midfielder, Christian Atsu who played for clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle united was declared dead after the search teams recovered his body in the rubble of a 12-story building in the city of Antakya. Antakya is in the southern region of Turkey, which received the worst hit of the earthquake.
Christian Atsu joined the Turkish club, Hatayspor back in September last year, Christian scored the winning goal for Hatayspor on February 5th against Kasimpasa S.K. which was a few hours before the earthquake.
Born on January 12th, 1992, Christian Atsu Twasam (Left footed) began his football career with Porto in 2011 and in 2013 was signed by Chelsea for £3.5 million (INR 35,12,70,156). He has played more than 60 matches for Ghana. He has also played for teams like Al-Raed in Saudi Arabia and Newcastle United. His last team before the demise was Hatayspor in Turkey. He represented Ghana in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
After this incident, Hatayspor tweeted, “There are no words to describe our sadness.” Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo also posted a photo of Atsu on Twitter saying, “Ghana football has lost one of its finest personnel and ambassadors, one who will be difficult to replace. He’ll be sorely missed.”
