Owned by Reliance Industries Limited, Mumbai Indians is undoubtedly the most successful T20 franchise in the Indian Premier League, and has lifted the cup not only once, but five times! (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020)
The iconic group has now planned on acquiring yet another franchise under the same brand name: MI New York.
The inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) will kick off this summer in the United States. It will be the first US professional Twenty20 cricket championship.
MI will only get to be a part of this tournament after completing their necessary negotiations, fulfilling bond agreements, and acquiring the receipt of corporate and third party approvals from the board.
Under the brand name Mumbai Indians, Reliance already owns four other franchises in three different continents, four different countries, and five different leagues: Mumbai Indians (IPL), MI Cape Town (South Africa 20), MI Emirates (International League T20), and Mumbai Indians (Women’s Premier League).
Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson, has announced how thrilled she is to welcome their New York franchise to the growing MI Family. The team hopes to establish Mumbai Indians as a global brand of ‘fearless and entertaining cricket’.
“This is another new beginning for MI and I look forward to the exciting journey ahead,” she added.
