28th March 2023: 101 skydivers over the age of 60 are competing in a world record attempt in California! Who are they and what records are they breaking? Read ahead to know more!
Skydiving is seen as a risky activity since it entails leaping from an airplane at a great height, falling through the air, and then using a safety parachute to slow the drop and land safely.
The sport carries inherent hazards despite the use of cutting-edge technology and safety measures. Even though certain individuals might believe there is an upper age restriction for parachute jumping, a group of Californians in their 60s and beyond are now setting a world record.
In order to attempt to make a massive formation in the sky, more than 100 skydivers between the ages of 60 and 78 assembled in Southern California, United States. To beat the world record, more than 100 elderly folks took part in this skydiving competition.
According to reports, the youthful "Skydivers Over Sixty" club formed in the air and shattered two world records.
A "point" in skydiving refers to how many different people in the group are in contact with one another. Two skydivers would be contacting one another, whereas the other skydiving enthusiasts would not be touching anyone in a "2-point" setup.
The team's snowflake formation photos and videos were shared on Instagram by Skydive Perris in Southern California. They stated that their jumpers from the SOS (Skydivers Over Sixty) group were featured on GoodMorningAmerica, an American television programme for their two new records.
101 people joined the group, breaking the previous record of 75 established in 2018. This created a new record for the largest one-point formation. Then, 95 individuals arranged themselves in a 2-point arrangement, smashing the prior record of 60 individuals achieved in 2017.
The 60-plus “youth” didn't break the mark until their fourth attempt, creating the second record, reported by the Southern California Skydiving Facility.
The group said in a statement that they were thankful to everyone who helped them make their dream come true.
