After a 7.8-magnitude earthquake near Turkey's southern border with Syria killed at least 54,000 people in both countries, Mexico sent rescue dogs to Turkey to help in the search operation.
Following the loss in the course of duty of a Mexican rescue dog that had been assisting in finding survivors of February's massive earthquake close to the Syrian border, Turkey provided Mexico's army a new search puppy as a gift.
The three-month-old German Shepherd will join Mexico's renowned canine force, which is trained to find survivors in an earthquake-prone nation.
Following an online vote, the black and beige furry creature with perky ears and large paws has been given the name "Arkadas," which is Turkish for "friend".
The same trainer that looked after Proteo, the rescue dog who passed away while on a mission in Turkey, will train Arkadas, according to the army.
Arkadas was formally welcomed to the force on Wednesday at a military facility in Mexico City while his new canines and human coworkers stood to attention. Arkadas was wearing a cushioned green harness with a miniature Mexican flag on it.
The national song of Mexico was being played over the speakers as the energetic dog whined.
The Mexican defense ministry tweeted on Arkadas' behalf, saying, "Thanks to my friends from Mexico who welcomed me with great affection, I promise to do my best to be a great search and rescue dog."
