To accommodate its expanding market demand, Sri Lanka will import one million eggs per day from five poultry farms in India, the island nation's top importing agency announced on May 30.
According to the head of Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation (STC), Asiri Valisundara, 20 million eggs were imported from India, of which 10 million were put on the market.
According to Mr. Valisundara, who was quoted by the Colombo Page news portal, the eggs were coming from two chicken farms in India, and the Animal Production Department had also given permission for the purchase of eggs from three other farms.
Three representatives from the State Trading Corporation and the Animal Production Department, he claimed, had been to Indian poultry farms. According to Mr. Valisundara, the market's demand will determine how many eggs are imported going forward.
According to the newspaper, he also indicated that the imported eggs would be sold for 35 pence each to bakeries, biscuit producers, catering services, and restaurants. Since last year, Sri Lanka has been experiencing a terrible and uncommon economic catastrophe.
High inflation has reduced purchasing power (purchasing power refers to the number of goods or services that a certain amount of money can buy at a given time), impacted many people's lives, and reversed previous development gains.
After announcing its first-ever financial default in April of last year, the island nation is battling to restore order to its economy, which is suffering from the crisis.
