25 May 2022: Several areas in Delhi are likely to battle the water crisis as river Yamuna is on the verge of drying up.
Delhi summers have always been challenging. This year, with the additional blow of a nation-wide heatwave, the national capital has another situation in hand to deal with this time – an acute water crisis. The river Yamuna is on the verge of drying up, which is likely to worsen the water crisis in Delhi.
Water production at the Chandrawal, Wazirabad and Okhla water treatment plants (WTPs) had fallen by around 25% on Monday on account of depleting water levels in the Yamuna, according to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). Due to the depletion of Yamuna, water supply may be hit in Palla, Bakhtawarpur, Hiranki, Tigipur, Hamirpur, Bakoli, Holambi Kala, Sannot, Bawana, Civil Line, Bada Hindurao, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj, New Rajendra Nagar, Patel Nagar.A statement from the DJB stated that the water level at the Wazirabad pond had fallen to 669.40 ft, against a normal level of around 674.50 ft. The release of raw water from Haryana had also reduced.
Haryana supplies a total of 610 million gallons of water a day to Delhi through two canals — CLC (368 MGD) and DSB (177) — and the Yamuna (65 MGD)“Since the Yamuna river is almost dry, we are diverting water from the Carrier Lined Canal (CLC) and the Delhi Sub Branch (DSB) towards Wazirabad. As a result, the water production at Haiderpur Phase I and Phase II and Bawana water treatment plants has been hit,” an official said. The Delhi government has urged people to store an adequate quantity of water in advance as per requirement. It added water tankers would be provided on request as supply would remain affected till the pond level improved to normal.
