17 April 2023: “We knocked the door but it is also up to the owner of the house to open the door,” Ukraine's deputy foreign minister said. Why ? What is going on ? Read to know more.
Emine Dzhaparova, Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister, made the proposal on Tuesday, saying that president Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be pleased to speak at the G-20 meeting in New Delhi, which will take place in September of this year.
Ms. Dzhaparova also urged India to include Ukrainian delegates in the G20 meetings because the war had affected the world economy while she was speaking at the Indian Council of World Affairs.
The European Union and 19 other nations make up the Group of 20, sometimes known as the G20. It strives to address important global economic concerns like climate change, international financial stability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable development and so on.
Mr. Zelenskyy's request to speak at the G20 leaders' conference is an intriguing idea, but it may put Delhi in a difficult position given that India voted in favour of allowing the Ukrainian President to address the UN while Russia refrained.
Mr. Zelenskyy spoke via video conference during the G20 summit in Bali. According to Ms. Dzhaparova, India can contribute more to promoting peace as a major power and the current G20 Chair; she expressed the hope that Indian officials would soon visit Kyiv.
For a "balanced approach" from New Delhi, according to Ms. Dzhaparova, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who has visited Moscow three times since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, can and should travel to Kyiv.
“Being with Russia, we are again very sincerely saying so, is actually being on the wrong side of history. Supporting Russia means it is to be in the evil visionary picture of the world,” she commented on India’s stance.
She claimed that because India is undergoing transformational changes, developing new relationships with Ukraine may take some time and should be based on a "pragmatic and balanced approach." “We knocked the door but it is also up to the owner of the house to open the door.” she said.
In addition, she cited Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, claiming that Gandhiji had advocated defending rights without the use of violence.
Ms Dzhaparova met with MEA [Ministry of External Affairs] Secretary Sanjay Verma. She was the first senior official from Kiev to do so since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out on February 24 of last year.
