According to officials with the U.S. Geological Survey, Kilauea, the second-largest volcano in Hawaii, began erupting on Wednesday, June 7, after a three-month pause.
A glow was observed in early morning webcam images from Kilauea's summit, on 9th June, according to the survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, indicating that an eruption was taking place within the Halema'uma'u crater (a pit crater within the much larger Kilauea Caldera at the summit of Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii), the summit caldera.
The observatory was informed about the pictures showing gaps at the foundation of the pit producing magma streams on the pit floor's surface.
Prior to giving the eruption notice, the observatory told about the expanded tremor action and changes in the patterns of ground distortion at the peak, which began on June 6 at night, showing the development of magma in the subsurface.
On Hawaii's Big Island, a restricted area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park houses all activities. As scientists assessed the eruption and accompanying risks, the volcano's alert level was upgraded to warning status, and the aviation color code changed to red.
"Large amounts of volcanic gas — primarily water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) — are continuously released during eruptions of Kilauea volcano," the USGS said in its statement.

One of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea, erupted from September 2021 through December of last year. Hawaii's largest volcano, Mauna Loa, was erupting on Hawaii's Big Island for roughly two weeks in December.
In January, Kilauea started to erupt once more following a brief respite. It ended in March after a 61-day eruption.
More than 700 homes were destroyed during the 2018 Kilauea eruption. Kilauea had been erupting since 1983, and streams of lava had periodically engulfed fields and houses before the massive 2018 eruption. The lava occasionally made it to the ocean during that time, resulting in extraordinary interactions with the water.
