10th January, 2022: Although the government was still considering another move to deport him, Novak Djokovic currently stands released from Australian immigration detention after winning the court case to remain in the country, on Monday.
On Monday, Novak Djokovic was finally released from Australian immigration detention centre after winning his "challenge to remain in the country. Judge Anthony Kelly arrived at a decision which stated that revocation of Novak’s visa by the federal government over his medical exemption from Covid 19 vaccination requirements was “unreasonable”.
Christopher Tran, the government lawyer argues that the decision falls under the power of the immigration minister to consider “whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation.” Therefore, the nine-time Australian open winner could face deportation by the federal government again and could miss the tournament starting from January 17.
“Despite all that has happened, I want to stay and try to compete at the Australian Open. I will remain focused on that,” Novak had tweeted earlier. He also stated on Monday, about how “pleased and grateful” he was after the judge decided against the cancellation of his visa.
