Mohit Teotia, the Spice Jet pilot who has become famous for making the mundane Airline safety instructions entertaining strikes again.
Some of you may remember the SpiceJet pilot who went viral for making the in-flight announcements in a unique poetic way? Well, Mohit Teotia became the Internet’s favourite after his videos went viral. Now, another video of the talented pilot has gone viral where he can be seen giving some safety instructions in a fun way.
Mohit Teotia, whose Instagram account is called ''Poetic Pilot'', has 2,94,000 followers on the platform.
Recently, shared on Instagram by Teotia, he explains the to passengers why they are required to to keep the window shields open during takeoff and landing. He starts with explaining why the Airlines actually have a rule wherein the passengers are supposed to keep the window shades open.
- If you keep the shades open then your eyes can adjunct to the light situation outside the plane and in case of an emergency if evacuation is necessary then it could be carried out as fast as possible.
- If the window shades are open then, in case of any emergency, the passengers and the crew can look through and determine which exit doors are blocked and which are in the clear.
- Reason three, he mentioned jokingly, saying was the most important reason and that was so that the passengers could take pictures through the open shades and share them on Facebook and Instagram.
Airlines instructions tend to become boring for frequent travellers. The instructions are extremely important and all the passengers should be listening to them carefully but the same instruction repeated again and again, in the same tone, make the passengers lose interest.
Some of passengers feel that these are age old rules which are still being repeated, because the Airlines crew have been instructed to do so. But that's not true. The life and well being of the passengers and the crew depends on these.
Here are the reasons why the Airline Crew insists that the shades are open during take off and landing:
- It improves situational awareness: What does that mean? Statistically, take off and landing are the most dangerous phase of a flight. During an emergency evacuation, flight attendants or passengers need to be able to see outside to determine whether it’s safe to open and use an emergency exit. Safe to open means the passengers and crew should be able to see if the engine is on fire. In that case, if you are a passenger, you would be able to take an immediate decision to use another exit.
An Aviation Safety Officer, Saran Udayakumar explained this to Quora users in a simple way. He said, that in cases of emergency, the cabin crew only have 90 seconds to evacuate the aeroplane. In order to make this possible the crew prepare the passengers and the aircraft so if anything does go wrong they can evacuate quickly. This also means emergency personnel outside can see into the cabin to assess the situation. He explained: “Passengers are curious; hence they are perfect extra eyes to see if something goes wrong out there. Usually passengers report stuff right away.”
- Adjustment of pupils: The pupils do not adapt immediately to changes in lighting. If the window shades are closed during a Take Off or Landing on a bright sunny day, when the light inside the aircraft cabin is low, opening the window shade on a warning will be blinding for the passengers and crew. And when an emergency response is critical, crucial time will be wasted trying to figure out what is happening outside. For the same reason, during night flights, the Cabin lights are dimmed.

But interestingly, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) doesn't require open windows during taxi, takeoff, and landing, even though it is considered as best practice according to United's Association of Flight Attendants.
