The bedchamber sword of Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century king of Mysore, was sold at the London-based Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art Auction for 14 million pounds ($17.4 million or Rs 143 crore).
The latest auction world record for an Islamic and Indian artifact has been set. As per a press release by Bonhams, the sword was estimated at around 1,500,000-2,000,000 pounds. Bonhams further said that the sword was the most important of the weapons with a proven personal association with the ruler.
Oliver White, Bonhams Head of Islamic and Indian Art and auctioneer said, “This spectacular sword is the greatest of all the weapons linked to Tipu Sultan still in private hands. Its close personal association with the Sultan, its impeccable provenance traceable to the very day it was captured, and the outstanding craftsmanship that went into its manufacture make it unique and highly desirable.”
The weapon is of the highest caliber. The blade is very exquisite and engraved, "The Sword of the Ruler." It was created by Mughal swordsmiths using a German blade design that was brought to India in the 16th century.
Five attributes of God are inscribed in masterfully crafted gold lettering on the hilt, along with two invocations that specifically address God.
According to the auction company, Tipu Sultan's sword was given to British Major General David Baird as a symbol of his valour after he was killed.
In 1782, Tipu Sultan succeeded his father as the monarch of the south Indian state of Mysore. Because of the strength with which he protected the interests of his kingdom, he was known as the "Tiger of Mysore." In fights against both bordering nations and the East India Company, which he was an adamant enemy of, he was a pioneer in the employment of rocket artillery.
A new calendar, currency system, and other administrative and financial changes that drew on his father's efforts were also highlights of his reign. He also made Mysore the most active economic region in India.
