Every year, World Sleep Day is observed to increase awareness of sleep as a basic human right that is frequently affected by modern lifestyle practices. Every year, it is observed on the third Friday of March.
It is observed this year on March 17, 2023, while in 2024 it will be observed on March 15.
The Global Sleep Society states that the annual celebration aims to honor sleep, raise awareness of its value, and address sleep-related problems that have an adverse effect on health.
History
The World Sleep Society, formerly known as the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), a non-profit organization with a group of committed medical professionals working and specializing in t sleep medicine and research, first observed World Sleep Day in 2008 in an effort to encourage and move ahead with sleeping hygiene globally.
The first World Sleep Day aimed to bring together sleep healthcare professionals to discuss and promote sleep knowledge globally.
Significance
The quantity and quality of sleep that the majority of people are able to get are rapidly declining as a result of the world's rising quick pace, the gradual erasure of distinct distinctions between work and leisure, and higher levels of stress everywhere. People are sleeping for less hours each night than they did previously, according to many studies by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the same time, other lifestyle modifications are leading to an increase in the prevalence of sleep disorders such chronic insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to major negative health effects, such as an elevated risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, according to research.
The World Sleep Society wants to promote sound sleep practises and lessen the occurrence of sleep disorders by increasing public knowledge about the value of sleep.
Theme
World Sleep Day has unique themes every year. The subjects have been selected to draw attention to various dimensions of sound sleep hygiene and to raise public awareness of particular sleep-related problems. "Sleep is essential for Health" will be the theme of World Sleep Day in 2023.
The theme intends to center talks on how sleep, along with exercise, mental health, and other elements, is crucial to overall health.
“World Sleep Day is an opportunity to promote sleep health alongside thousands of other sleep health professionals and advocates. When we all promote sleep health and #WorldSleepDay together, our combined effort is greater than the sum of its parts. Spread the word about sleep health on World Sleep Day, and help elevate the conversation around sleep." stated the World Sleep Society.
